how to have better time management

Posted by Erica Patterson on

time management is a skill that can be learned and improved, just like any other. however, our busy lives often make it difficult for us to find time to improve it. in this article, we'll look at some simple techniques that will help you get a handle on your schedule so that you have more time for what matters most!

be realistic about your time.

you can't do everything you want to. that's just the way it is, so you need to learn how to prioritize your tasks and say no to some things.

you also need to be realistic about your skills and abilities. if certain tasks are beyond what you can do well or on time, don't take on those projects!

focus on what you can change.

  • don't worry about things that are out of your control.
  • don't worry about inevitable things.
  • don't worry about things that don't matter.
  • don't worry about things that have already happened and can't be changed, even if they were bad experiences or mistakes (e.g., "i shouldn't have said that thing to my boss.").

set goals, not tasks.

when it comes to time management, you need to start with goals. goals are the reason why we do what we do. tasks are just the things we have to do to achieve our goals. so before you start your day or week (or whatever timeframe), set out specific, tangible, and measurable goals for yourself.

for example: "i want to lose 10 pounds by June 1st." this is a tangible goal because it's easy for others around you who know what this means for your health, but also because there's an end date attached which makes measuring progress easier than if there wasn't one--you can see how much closer or further away from your target weight by checking back at any given moment during this period!

or... "i want my business plan finished by Friday so that i can pitch it at next week's meeting." this is also very specific because if someone asks me what exactly "finished" means in terms of their business plan (and they will), then all i have to say is: "it needs two more pages added on market research and competitor analysis sections before i submit the final draft on friday afternoon."

start small, and focus on one thing at a time.

when you're trying to improve your time management skills, it's important to start small. don't try to change everything about your life all at once--that can be overwhelming and lead to burnout. instead, think about one thing at a time: what do i want to accomplish today? what steps do i need to take for that goal (or "task") to happen? once those steps are clear in your mind, focus on them until they're completed before moving on to another task or project.

once again: don't try changing everything about yourself all at once! break down big projects into smaller ones so they're easier for you to manage well and keep track of what needs doing next for those projects' completion

break down big projects into smaller ones that you can manage well.

if you have a big project on your hands, break it down into smaller pieces. you can do this by creating a list of everything that needs to be done and then breaking those tasks into smaller chunks. for example, if you have an essay due in one week and it's due at midnight on friday night, start working on it early so that you don't feel overwhelmed by the time crunch later in the week. if there are parts of your essay that are easier than others (i.e., researching or writing), focus on those first so that they're out of the way before moving on to more challenging parts like editing or proofreading your work.

if there are multiple people involved with completing this major task--whether they're coworkers or friends--make sure everyone knows what their role is within each step of completing it together as efficiently as possible!

make lists of things to do and check them off when they're done.

a to-do list is a great way to stay organized, especially if you have a lot on your plate. you can use it to write down all the tasks that need to be done and prioritize them so you know what needs to get done first.

you can also use a calendar or planner as another tool for managing time by scheduling appointments and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. if you're looking for something more advanced, there are plenty of apps out there designed specifically for helping people manage their lives better--you might want to check out Todoist or AnyDo!

you can improve your time management skills if you're willing to try new things and not give up!

if you're struggling to manage your time, don't give up! you can improve your skills if you are willing to try new things and not be afraid of failure. here are some ideas:

  • don't be afraid to ask for help
  • try using a timer when working on tasks that have specific deadlines (e.g., homework or work projects) so that you don't get distracted by other things during the time allotted for that task.
  • delegate tasks with deadlines when possible (e.g., asking friends who are good at writing papers or doing math problems).

now that you have some tips to improve your time management skills, it's time to put them into practice! don't be afraid to try something new and see how well it works for you. remember that there are so many different ways to manage your time--it all depends on what works best for each person. you might find that some of these ideas work well in certain situations but not others; just remember that no one formula fits everyone perfectly (and neither does ours!). the important thing is finding what works best for YOU and sticking with it until it becomes habit-forming again."
