spring has finally sprung, meaning all of us that are affected by seasonal affective disorder are coming out of our cocoons. we wanted to share some ways to help ease your way out of the seasonal slump and back into feeling like yourself. however, before we start let's talk about SAD.
SAD or seasonal affective disorder affects about 5 percent of the US population and typically begins when the days get shorter and the night is longer. it is common amongst women and younger people and it is very important to deal with because all forms of depression should be cared for.
here are a few tips for recovery -
talk to your doctor.
this is important as to be properly diagnosed you will need to speak to a mental health professional. discuss ways to adjust from your seasonal depression to daylight savings times.
purchase a light box.
a lightbox could be a form of light therapy. it purposely exposes you to artificial light. a more natural way to do this now that we are in daylight savings time is to go outside after work to enjoy the natural light.
arise at dawn.
waking up at dawn could help get your mind off on the right track. beginning to wake up when the sun is rising could add an additional boost to your morning, mood, and outlook on the day.
get social.
begin attending social events again, the days are longer which leaves more time for gathering with friends, walks in the park with the dog, or hanging out with co-workers after work. it is important as social isolation and depression can be linked and it's time to break out and spend quality time with loved ones.
take a vacation/staycation:
no better way to welcome a new season than a getaway. going away can lift your mood and get your headspace back on track from the long winter. however, if you are not comfortable traveling just yet do a staycation and reset.
